Reading along in Proverbs 10, I came across a little something that just grabbed my heart and has stayed on my mind.
Proverbs 10:5 says, “He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.”
From the context, I think the writer was talking about laziness and hard work, but y’all, the last bit of that verse has implications far beyond that for believers.
Because we live in harvest time.
“The fields are white,” you know?
And, so many of us are sleeping right through it.
I have neighbors who do not know Christ.
I have family members who do not know Christ.
And, what am I doing about it?
Some days, do I even care?
Sleeping. That’s what it is.
And, meanwhile, the harvest is rotting. Just like tomatoes left too long in a summer garden. Waste. Decay. Death.
And, if someone walking up to my untended garden embarrasses me, how much more should I feel remorse before my Father for sitting comfortably inside while his harvest goes ungathered?
Lord, forgive me for sleeping during your harvest. Wake me. Wake your church. Send us out into your harvest fields….for they are ready.
