So, when I walked outside to supervise students at break this morning, the cool air and gray skies brought tears to my eyes.
And, not just because we finally have a break from the heat and humidity.
It’s what I like to call a Limuru Day, and it’s perfect for layering sweaters, drinking chai and feeling really homesick.
If you miss Kenya like I do, that is.
Those of you who’ve never traveled to my other home probably only envision sweeping savannas or hot, dry areas or maybe even beautiful beaches; but those of use who know the country understand that many of its most beautiful areas are in the highlands. Fertile areas that surround the Great Rift Valley and offer a break from the heat of the lower lands.
It can be quite surprising, actually. I’ll never forget a night 20 years ago when I was shivering in bed under four blankets, wearing leggings and sweatpants, two shirts and a sweatshirt, as well as at least two pairs of socks.
Because Kenya can be COLD.
I had just moved from the heat of a deep South summer and wasn’t prepared for the winter weather that met me.
But I loved it at once.
Because like Karen Blixen wrote, “In the highlands, you woke up in the morning and thought: ‘Here I am, where I ought to be.'”
And, one days like today, I wish I were there once more.
So, for those of you who might feel the way I do, I thought I’d share a bit of digital art today. Just subscribe below to receive the 31 Free Printables and SVG Files I’m offering this month, including the Karen Blixen Quote Digital Art Print, as well as encouraging updates from time to time.
