I use a lot of words, always have.  In fact, when I spent a weekend being interviewed for the missions sending agency I worked with after college, one of the trainers did an exercise in which he observed the communication of our group.  When the exercise was over he said, “So-and-so, you spoke the most often, but Charlie used the most words.”

What can I say?  I work things out with words.

I just don’t want those words to be empty. Or worse, wrong, hurtful, harmful.

Because what I say reflects what’s in my heart, and my heart should be the home of holiness.

What I say reflects what's in my heart, and my heart should be the home of holiness. #wordsClick To Tweet

What about yours?  When people hear your words, they see your heart.

That’s what Jesus meant when he said, “The mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.”

And, that scares me sometimes because when I listen to my words, I realize my heart must not reflect his.

It’s why we must strive to tame our tongues and continually turn to the only one who can completely control them.

How do we do that?

I’ll be honest.  It’s not easy. But these suggestions might help:

  • Using the Fruit of the Spirit to Tame Your Tongue
  • 10 Bible Verses to Help You Tame Your Tongue

Today’s free Matthew 12:34 SVG File and free printable will serve as a reminder, too!  Just subscribe below to receive the file, as well the rest of the files I’ve given away this month!
