Yes, I know…it’s a hill with grass on top. That’s what I always kind of thought before…which really was the result of a bad memory of a very long day trip to Philadelphia as a child only to be severely disappointed when we arrived at Nanih Waiya just in time to take a look and leave. Boring. Our visit to Emerald Mound? Not boring at all.
Y’all…this thing is huge! The kids had a blast climbing up and rolling down. Again and again.
It would be a great place to pack a picnic and visit one day, especially if you’re visiting other things in the Natchez area. Just remember: there are no bathrooms so be prepared. (At least, I didn’t notice any.)
It’s really interesting to see how and why the mounds were built and to know it’s the second largest mound in the U.S. Pretty cool, huh?
Enjoy!
