Sometimes I just need to stop. There are some things I just need to drop.
Like when I am angry with my husband and just want to say “one more thing.”
Or when I feel the need to remind him of “last time…”
I may think I need to say more, but wisdom thinks otherwise.
“Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.” (Proverbs 17:9)
You see, if I want to show love, I will let it go.
Do I really want an argument? It certainly seems that way sometimes because often I could end the argument before it even begins. And, I should.
Proverbs 17:14 says, “Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.”
See, most of the time I don’t want to start a war with my words, but I say them anyway.
It’s crazy, and it’s wrong.
God’s word says, “Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin.” (Proverbs 17:19)
I don’t want to be like that. I don’t want to seek out something sinful.
So…
I should stop. Especially when everything in me knows it.
I should stay. Calm. Cool. Committed.
I should strive. For peace. For unity. For us.
After all, “Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent and discerning if they hold their tongues.” (Proverbs 17:28)
