I know it’s not going to shock you to hear me say this, but sometimes things just don’t work out the way I plan. Like last night’s date night that we spent at the after hours clinic. Or, last week’s “date night that wasn’t” either. Or, the cake I made for someone’s birthday a week too early. Or how I was going to keep my kitchen clean. Or finish my laundry. Or…you get the idea.
I can’t help but remember what James wrote: “Now listen you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there and carry on business and make money. Why you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.'” (James 4:13-14)
Clearly.
But God does. His word says that all the days ordained for me were written in his book before one of them came to be. (Psalm 139:16)
That’s a good thing. It means that he planned for our little one to start crying BEFORE we left last night, not after. Same with the little getaway we had planned last week. We weren’t far from home when we found out plans had to change, and what would have been a fun date night turned into a wonerful time of family fun. And that cake? My little girl took it to school the day after I thought it was due and her class was able to celebrate her taeacher’s birthday in a special way. (I had no idea it was her teacher’s birthday when I offered to bring the cake…God is so good!)
And, about the laundry…when I admitted to another mom this morning the state our laundry is in, she said, “OH! That makes me feel so much better!” My mountain of laundry offered her a load of encouragement. You see, God can even use our dirty clothes to do his will.
