Let’s take a moment this morning and be honest with one another. Or, just let me be honest with you.
Sometimes I get tired of all the things I HAVE to do as a mother.
Discipline.
Laundry.
Dishes.
Discipline.
Cleaning.
Sweeping.
Discipline.
You’re probably noticing a pattern here.
Teaching our kids right from wrong, helping them understand that actions have consequences, and enforcing those consequences is one of the most important parts of parenting. It’s also one of the most exhausting. Because it never seems to end, does it?
I don’t know why that surprises me.
I’m still learning to choose wisely. I still think, do and say things I shouldn’t. I still sin, and I still need correction. Many times, for the same things over and over again.
Just like my kids.
They have been entrusted to us. We’re responsible for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. Thankfully, we have God’s word to help us do so.
It’s a beautiful burden to bear, but sometimes, it’s a heavy one.
What if we don’t do it well? (Because some days I don’t.)
What if they don’t learn? (Because sometimes it seems they never will.)
What if we give up? (Because I have been tempted to.)
And, then….what if we do it (mostly) right and don’t give up, and they choose wrong anyway?
Because sometimes they will.
Because at the end of the day, they’re just like us. They have the freedom to choose, and we can’t control it. They’re made of flesh, too, and flesh is slave to sin.
But God gives grace, and his spirit sets free.
So, day after day, we have to point them to Him. In our discipline, we must disciple. Rules will never make them righteous. Only Christ can.
Remember that when you don’t see results.
Remember that they can only change their minds; he must change their hearts.
And don’t give up.
“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.” (1 Peter 5:2-3)
