Storyteller Lynda Deniger enjoys school visits, entertaining young children, and encouraging them to love reading. Her first book concerns life on the coastal Gulf waters with “Salty Seas,” a talking shrimp boat and his captain “Charley,” showing the values of hard work, friendship and teamwork.
Deniger, an enthusiastic storyteller had already had some success with her first picture book titled, Salty Seas and His Heroic Friends. Even children’s books need a plot and when the captain falls overboard, the opportunity is given for friends to be his heroes in a rescue. The simple story highlights the shrimping industry. Deniger said her background in advertising and public relations helped her decide to self-publish. The lovely watercolors are by artist Paulette Ferguson of Denham Springs, Louisiana.

Timing her second book to be released recently on the one-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of April 2010, Lynda Deniger has written a well-researched story telling of the animals who have survived the disaster giving alliterative names to appeal to young children. Patti, the title character, is a brown pelican, also the state bird of Louisiana. Patti Pelican, Sammy Seagull, and Dottie Dolphin talk as does the shrimp boat, Salty Seas. The new title, Patti Pelican and the Gulf Oil Spill is illustrated by Paulette Ferguson.
The Gulf Oil Spill continues to be a disaster with major impact on thousands of people in the states touching the Gulf of Mexico. The Deepwater Horizon or British Petroleum (BP) oil spill was the worst environmental disaster in United State history! Economic and personal consequences continue to exist in our state of Mississippi in addition to Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida.
Teachers will find factual information about efforts to preserve the animals and organizations that work to protect the environment.
