How to Create the Perfect Backyard Space for Entertaining

One of the best things about summer is the opportunity to spend a little more time with friends and family. The longer days make it easier to get together, and the extra daylight makes outdoor entertaining ideal. With a little planning, your backyard can easily become your favorite place to host summer gatherings.

Honestly, it might not take much effort at all to turn your outdoor space into the perfect place for parties. Maybe all you need to do is add a couple of deck chairs or some fun lighting to create a space your family and your guests will enjoy. However, if you want to really make your yard a space that’s great for entertaining, a little bit of time and effort will go a long way toward creating a backyard you and your loved ones can enjoy all summer long.

Make Some Space

We tend to think it’s only the interior part of our properties that can become cluttered, but exterior areas can, too. Having too many potted plants, a small lawn, or bulky, outdated furniture can all make a yard less inviting than it needs to be for a great get-together.

So the first step is to make some space. Having a blank canvas to work with will really allow you to put together a yard that makes a lasting impression. If possible, look at increasing the usable space by extending the lawn closer to the perimeter and keeping any walkways as narrow as possible.

Invest in Outdoor Furniture

It’s worth adding some plants and flowers to boost your yard’s aesthetic appeal, but the main priority should be to make the space as homey and comfortable as possible. An outdoor dining table will allow you to host lovely evening dinners, while investing in a bar height patio set will create a casual atmosphere that’s a little more intimate and perfect for card games as well. Throw in a selection of comfortable seating — including a hammock or two — and you and your friends will be able to spend long summer days enjoying each other’s company.

Of course, don’t forget to add some shade. A few great options include umbrellas, a pergola, or even trees, which allow your friends and family to stay sun-safe during the hottest parts of the day.

BBQ and Pool Days

Looking to really transform your yard into the place to be this summer? Then consider adding a high-grade BBQ and even an above-ground swimming pool if you’re not able to build a new inground pool just yet. Those two things, combined with the other ideas on this list, will ensure that you and your loved ones have no reason to go looking elsewhere to have a great time this summer. You’ll have delicious food at the ready and the perfect place to cool off right in your backyard.

Cozy Space

Finally, don’t forget to add a dose of coziness to your yard. Make your outdoor space an extension of the indoors by bringing your personality and your favorite creature comforts with you. This will help extend the amount of time you can use your backyard as an entertaining space, since it’ll mean that you can stay out there even when it’s dark and/or the temperatures begin to dip. Adding an outdoor fire pit and outdoor lighting will do the trick, but be sure to make some blankets available as well to make things extra cozy!
