How to Take Your Home from Drab Back to Fab

Is your home looking a little drab these days? I’ll be honest. Mine is. My furniture has endured four kids, and it’s as tired as I am. Many of our walls could use a fresh coat of paint, too. Let’s face it: our homes are just like our wardrobes. Sometimes they need a little refresh.

But…

If you’re like me, when it comes to my house (and my clothes), I have a limited amount of money to spend, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make changes one step at a time…within budget. Below, you’ll find some of the different things that you can do to take your home from drab back to fab.

Start By Sorting Out Your Curb Appeal

First, consider sorting out your curb appeal. This is the first thing people see when they visit your home, and it’s the first thing you see when you come back to it. There are some simple ways to improve your home’s curb appeal, like keeping the lawn cut, putting a few flowers out front, and giving your front door a fresh coat of paint. None of these quick fixes are very costly either.

Take a little time to think of small changes or additions you can make to create an inviting, welcoming look because they way people feel in your home begins when they walk right up to it. It also affects the way you feel about coming home each day. I  know that if things are behind outside, I feel overwhelmed even before I walk through the door. No one wants to feel that way after a long day.

From There, Fix Your Roof If Needed

While we’re on the topic of the outside of your home, you also should take some time to check out your roof. Actually, it’s really important to keep a regular check on your roof because damage to your roof can cause enormous damage to the rest of your home. The earlier that you can catch potential issues, the less difficult they are to fix. In fact, you might even find that you are able to sort out minor repairs by yourself, without calling in the professionals, which is one of the best ways to stick to a budget.

However, if the damage is more extensive, you will have to find someone to come out to take a look. They can tell you whether you’re going to need a repair or a replacement, and then you need to take that advice and get it done. Read reviews of companies that offer residential roof replacement and repair before you hire someone, which will help you choose the right professional and hopefully find the right price.

Create Your Dream Kitchen

One of the most important rooms in our home is the kitchen. It’s not just where we prepare meals and eat them, it’s where we hang out.  If I have friends over, it’s where we sit and visit. It is truly the heart of our home. The cabinets haven’t been painted since at least 1980 something.

And, there are a lot of them.

To be honest, the thought of tackling our kitchen and turning it into something from my Pinterest boards terrifies me.

Kitchen projects are big projects, but by updating your kitchen, you can add approximately 20% to the overall value of your property. That’s huge. There are also plenty of different ways you can upgrade and update your kitchen space. New, more energy-efficient appliances are one way to go. Fresh paint is another. New flooring and countertops can also have a huge impact on how your kitchen looks and feels.

Remember that while you can spend a lot of money upgrading and updating your kitchen, you don’t necessarily have to. Instead, you might want to think about keeping things budget-friendly, affordable, and still creating a massive impact. For instance, you could think about refinishing the cabinets and doors around your kitchen as well as investing in new faucets. This isn’t going to cost you a lot of money and will guarantee that your kitchen space looks brand new once more. Remember, little things can make a big difference.

Create A Cozy Living Room

So, why does my family hang out in the kitchen so much? I think it’s because we don’t really like our living room. The furniture needs updating, and it isn’t very comfortable. The room isn’t cozy, so we prefer our kitchen.  We need to make some changes. Furniture is probably the biggest thing on my list, but for you, the solution might be as simple as rearranging the furniture and painting the room a new color. You might need to make some more extensive changes though. It all comes down to personal preference, so decide what you want to do, add some personal touches like candles and cozy blankets, and you’ll be well on your way to a space you want to use.

Upgrade Your Bedroom

If there is any room in your house that needs to offer you comfort and relaxation, it’s probably your bedroom. It needs to be a haven and a place of rest for you. For that reason, if you find it needs refreshing, make it a priority. That’s one of the things I’m planning on doing this summer. My bedroom needs less clutter and a fresh coat of paint. After that, I’ll start finding things like bedding that will bring the room together and make it as comfortable as it will be stylish.

Take Your Garden Beyond Basic

If your garden is looking a little basic, now might be the time to make some changes. After all, your yard is an extension of your home and can offer expanded entertaining space. If there are things you dream of doing, like creating an outdoor kitchen or putting in a pool, make a plan and take the plunge. If you need smaller ticket items, consider a little landscaping or some new furniture. Even simply adding a fire pit can create a space you’ll enjoy. We did this last winter at absolutely no cost, and our friends and family loved it!

Yes, updating areas of your home can be extremely expensive, but when it comes to decor, there are almost always budget-friendly ways to do things. I’m going to be tackling a few of them soon and look forward to sharing the outcomes with you!
