I have proof.
Tonight, a Chinese gentleman sat down across from me at dinner, looking a little familiar. He lives and serves here in East Africa, and feeling as though I had seen him before, I asked him how long he had lived here. (I was thinking maybe we had met in language school.) The answer was: not long enough to have met me here. So, I asked where he and his wife came from, and his answer was this:
MISSISSIPPI.
I kid you not.
When I recovered enough to close my mouth, I opened it right back up to ask which part of Mississippi.
Are you ready for this?
OXFORD…where they had lived for seven years….while I was in school there.
Don’t worry…it gets better!
We even went to the same church.
Seriously. We knew some of the same people and everything.
The only time the world ever seemed a bit smaller was when I lived in Kenya and was taking my dad and sisters around to see the sights. As usual, my dad was sporting an Ole Miss shirt when a voice behind us said:
If someone in Nairobi is wearing an Ole Miss t-shirt, I bet I know them…and the guy did! He had met both me and my older sister before.
Crazy.
And so wonderful. Tonight, God handed me one of the most encouraging conversations I have had in a long while from a Chinese couple from Mississippi living in East Africa. How cool is that?
P.S. Didn’t have my camera with me and so wish I had….might have to find them in the morning and ask for a photo opp….
