Little Tips that Make a Big Difference on Difficult Days

As moms, we are almost running ragged, aren’t we? Being busy is our way of life, but some days are just harder than others. One tantrum turns the morning manic, and we spend the rest of the day trying to catch up. A late night means rushed homework and undone chores, and we find it’s more than just the dishes piling up.

At times like these, stress can become a constant companion.

On days like this, the smallest things can sometimes help the most. Sometimes, little luxuries, simple, soothing touches can offer a surprising amount of calm during the most hectic and stressful moments. Here are a few little suggestions that might make a big difference on hard days.

Soften up your surroundings

There’s something naturally soothing about soft and cozy textures. Whether it’s a plush throw spread on the couch or a warm pair of socks just out of the dryer, little touches like these can offer sensory relief that can help the body and mind slow to an acceptable pace. You may benefit from a weighted blanket, which applies gentle pressure and is used to promote relaxation. I have one, and let me tell you, I love it. My husband gave it to me for Christmas a couple of years ago, and when I took it out of the box and spread it over my lap, my entire body relaxed.  Maybe sit and read for fifteen minutes under one just to feel that weight, or sleep under one to get a really good night’s sleep.  You’ll feel refreshed and a little less stressed.

Small pauses and light pampering

Self-care is often talked about in the context of taking a spa day or going on a shopping trip, but it’s not always that easy to find the time or money to indulge in a full day of pampering. And let’s face it, sometimes it can be just as relaxing to take some time out from your chores, have a cup of coffee or tea, and sit comfortably while you read, study your Bible, or listen to some of your favorite music while you enjoy your downtime. Make a habit of creating a little oasis of calm in your day. Stop and enjoy the little treat, and your to-do list might just seem a little bit more doable after.

Focus on little victories

On difficult days, the list of things to do can completely overwhelm you. When there is so much to do, it’s hard to know where to start, so the best thing to do is often to just pick one thing and get it done. Cleaning a kitchen counter, arranging part of the living room, or tidying away toiletries in the bathroom can represent an easy win, and then you move on to the next thing and get it done, too.

Seeing the day as a series of small things rather than a monolithic mega-task can make hard things seem possible and help prevent procrastination. If something needs to be bumped to tomorrow or another day, so be it. What matters is chipping away at the to-do list.

When you look at the day ahead and feel like it’s an insurmountable challenge, the best approach is always to give yourself a good bit of grace.  Take some time for yourself, allowing yourself little treats and breaking big tasks down into smaller ones. When you do so, the overwhelm will ease, and you’ll find yourself refreshed.
