Our home is more than 60 years old, and the bathrooms are showing their age. I dream of adding new tile, replacing old tubs with walk-in showers, and adding a little more space to the master bath. Not to mention turning a rather large dressing room into a separate bath for my teenage son. Actually, doing any of those things? That’s another matter. Fist, there’s the cost. We all know that kitchen and bath renovations can be very expensive, but they are also very disruptive. To remodel our master bath would mean moving upstairs to the girls’ bathroom for a time. Three teenage girls sharing one bathroom is quite enough. Adding their parents and a teenage brother might just tip us all over the edge.
Still, there are so many benefits to renovating your bathroom, including adding more storage, updating your suite, and making it a safer space for the whole family. Not to mention the value that it adds to your home. I know renovating our bathrooms would be a major improvement to our home, but I don’t know if we are ready for the disruption it would cause.
The good news is that there are ways to minimize this disruption and complete the renovations with as little stress as possible. Here are a few ideas I’ve found:
Make some alternative hygiene plans
It’s hard to imagine what you’ll do when you don’t have access to your bathroom during a renovation, but it is impossible to manage without access to it for a little while. If you’re going to do a bathroom remodel, you will need to make sure you have some alternative hygiene plans in place.
Thankfully, we can do one bathroom at a time and still have access to another one. If you don’t have that luxury, one option is to shower at your local gym, which is perfect if you already have a membership. We also live close to family, so in a crunch (like when we experience power outages) we visit my dad’s to shower. He’s our closest neighbor, but if you don’t have family nearby, you can ask a neighbor or close friend if you can use their facilities for a time. Our church also has showers in the family life center so that might be an option.
Another option is setting up a wash station that includes fresh water, washing up bowls, clothes, and soap. This is a good option for those in a pinch or for those whose main bathroom will only be out of action for a few days at most.
Last of all, remember that you should keep a supply of products that will help you freshen up during this time. Think of wet wipes and dry shampoo to make sure you feel your best even if you can’t get to your regular shower or bath.
Pick specialist contractors
Delays are not something that you want when it comes to bathroom renovations. After all, the longer they take to complete, the longer you will need to make alternative arrangements for your hygiene needs.
Additionally, by choosing a reliable bathroom remodel contractor, you will ensure that your home is left in a clean and tidy state at the end of the project. This means they’ll complete your new bathroom while you’re leaving your home, looking beautiful and brand new.
Plan your renovation at the most convenient time
Using the tactics above to ensure you have alternate arrangements for hygiene during your renovation can make things much easier, but do you know what is even more stress-free? Choosing the most appropriate and convenient time for the work to take place.
For example, choosing to get your bathroom remodeled when you have a newborn or an aged relative staying with you for a time is probably not the best idea. However, scheduling the majority of your bathroom remodel work for a time when you are out of town, like in the summer, means you can skip all the hassle and stress involved and return to a brand-new, functional, and clean bathroom. Choosing a contractor you trust is essential!
Even with tips like these, facing a bathroom remodel can feel daunting. What are your tips for tackling the project?
