It’s August, and soon enough, the cries of “I’m bored!” will be silenced, and “I’m tired!” will probably take their place. (Seriously, how much can we try to squeeze into any given school week? We’re trimming our schedules down this year, and hopefully, everyone will benefit.) Still, until my daughter starts school, the complaint of boredom will persist. (Really, she’s not THAT bad about it and has always been able to entertain herself, but still….)
Anyway, this week, we had a few blessed hours of sleeping babies so we made salt dough. It was so easy and fun and has afforded her hours of entertainment. She was able to mix it up, roll it out, cut the shapes and paint/glitter it to her heart’s content.
Now, she can use it to make jewelry. The fun just keeps on coming!
It’s a really simple recipe, and here’s what you do:
Mix one cup of flour, 1/2 cup of salt and 1/2 cup water, kneading to the consistency of play dough or pizza dough or whatever. (Note: I just did this with the dough hook of my KitchenAid…fast and easy and not too messy at all. Oh, and I added a little bit more water to get the consistency I wanted.)
Roll out on a floured surface and cut into desired shapes. Bake at 250 for 2 hours.
Allow the shapes to cool then paint! We used fingernail polish, and it worked really well. What? You don’t have dozens of bottles of glittery nail polish? Get yourself a six-year-old girl…she told me today that glitter was kind of her thing. There is just never enough.
We’re already planning to do this again for Christmas ornaments!
Enjoy!
