The Quick Guide To Organizing Your Closet

If there is one thing I really need to do right now, it’s clean out my closet. It is full of clothes I need to get rid of because I haven’t worn them in years, and the shelves are a mess. Organization? It’s nonexistent. If something is not directly in front of me when I open the door, I have practically no hope of finding it. Please, tell me I’m not the only one.

Is your closet a little more chaotic than controlled? Then you and I both need to do a little organizing. Getting your closet organized can help you in a few different ways, including:

  • Getting rid of clutter
  • Making it easier to choose outfits
  • Learning how to do more with less.

And there are many more! But if you’ve been putting off sorting your closet because you think it’ll take too much time, think again. This handy guide will give you the best tips for organizing your closet quickly and easily, making you wish you’d started sooner.

Get everything out

Organizing your closet isn’t something to be done in stages. Set aside some time when you know you can really get into things and simply get everything out. That’s right, everything! Some things will never make it back into your closet, but the things that do will be going back into a neat and organized space.

When you take everything out, you’ll be able to see if your closet is built for your needs. Freshen things up, choose the best carpet for closets for your flooring, and change up your units and shelving if you need to. You’ll then have a fresh new space ready to fill with your things.

Be brutal with your choices

Next comes the fun bit – the decluttering! Decluttering your closet will help you get rid of the things you no longer wear, like or need, and make sure they go to a new home. Whether you take them to Goodwill, sell them, or take them to a recycling center, avoid as much waste as possible.

Be brutal with your choices. If something is old, doesn’t fit, or hasn’t been worn in at least the last 1-2 years, it’s time for it to go! This will help you be more selective with your clothing choices in the future, ensuring you invest in items that are designed to last.

Organize by style

Now here comes the fun bit! As you move things back into your closet, you can think a little more carefully about how clothes are laid out. Organize your clothing by style, grouping things like dresses, pants, and shirts together – making it much easier to put outfits together. You may even wish to change your layout according to the season. You could then organize everything by color to make your clothes a little easier to find! Take a look at some walk-in closet ideas to show you how it’s done.

Keep on top of it

Once you’ve finished organizing your closet, the hard part is to keep it that way! Make time once a season to reorganize your closet, taking the same approach to decluttering and sorting to make it easier to find your clothes. Regular maintenance is much easier than going through it all again in a year or two!

In just a few simple steps, you can say goodbye to clutter and say hello to a more organized closet.
