4 Simple Hacks To Cut Your Energy Bills

Whether you’ve just moved into a new place or you’ve been in the same home for years, you will always want to make your house a home without overdoing it financially. There are always so many upgrades and repairs needed, and one of the hardest things to do is to figure out ways to take care of things efficiently and cost-effectively. We still need to be comfortable, too, though.

And, with the rising price of everything, saving money in any area is not just helpful…it’s absolutely necessary for many of us.

So, how can we keep our homes cozy and warm in the winter or cool and comfortable as the days warm up without sending our monthly energy bills soaring?

In the winter, as temperatures drop, heating systems work harder, and lights must stay on longer. Silly mistakes and inefficient practices can cost us.  The good news is that even the smallest changes can make a huge impact on your energy bills. Cutting costs doesn’t mean you have to suffer through the different seasons. With a few easy adjustments, you can maintain a comfortable home while reducing waste. Here are a few ways to do just that:

Strategically Adjust Your Thermostat

It might seem like a small step, but changing your thermostat by a few degrees at certain times can lead to significant savings. With a programmable or smart thermostat, you will have an automated process that ensures energy efficiency. If temperatures are steady, your heating system will be prevented from overworking. When it’s cold, layer up with warm clothing and blankets to stay cozy, and when the weather is warm, lose those layers!

Improve Insulation

Especially in older homes like mine, you might experience significant drafts. Our windows are the main culprit here. Even the best heating systems cannot keep a home warm if heat heads right out of the house. Check for drafts around doors and windows and seal them as best as you can. Insulating your basement, attic, and crawl spaces will prevent a lot of heat loss. It can also keep the cool air in come summer. Professional help can come in handy here. With a well-insulated home, your home will stay comfortable year-round.

Maintain Vents And Heating Systems

Many times people don’t think about issues with their HVAC system until there’s a problem with it. (And, let’s face it: that problem is usually going to happen on the hottest day of the year…or the coldest.) Don’t let little problems become big ones. Be sure to replace air filters regularly to keep airflow efficient. This will also prevent strain and issues with the system. Keep heating vents clear from obstructions such as furniture or rugs so that heat can be even distributed. Clogged dryer vents can cause fire hazards as well as inefficiency so having them professionally cleaned can make a big difference. Companies like JCS Home Services and similar options can come to the rescue – they’ll reduce energy waste and enhance home safety. The price may seem significant, but professional help and maintenance can save you in the grand scheme of things.

Energy-Efficient Lights And Appliances

During winter days, when the sun sets before six, you will rely more on your home’s lighting. Switch to LED bulbs during the darker evenings to lower electricity costs. They will use up to 75% less energy than traditional options. Unplug unused electronics that still draw power in standby mode. The smallest changes can contribute to long-term energy savings.
